SANTA CLARA, Calif. - You can only keep a goalscorer like Abby Wambach down for so long, and FC Gold Pride found this out the hard way on Sunday, as the U.S. international scored two goals - the second coming deep into second half stoppage time - to give the visiting Washington Freedom a wild 4-3 victory over FCGP. A few key defensive breakdowns by the Earthquakes and a strong individual effort from Seattle’s Steve Zakuani were enough to give Seattle Sounders FC a 2-0 victory over San Jose Saturday night before a packed house at Qwest Field.

Zakuani, the first pick in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft, was a source of trouble for the Earthquakes from the beginning the match and finished his night with a goal and an assist in 67 minutes of work. Read more…

Tim Hanley’s apology

By Tim Hanley · April 23, 2009

Dear readers,

I would like to apologize for comments I made in an article I wrote for Centerlinesoccer.com prior to the ESPN match last week.

The comments I made regarding DC United players, staff and owners was were inappropriate and unprofessional.

I deeply regret any references that could be construed as a personal attack or lack of respect directed at anyone in the DC United organization.

I have the utmost respect for the work they have done and would not knowingly do anything to undermine that effort despite my mistakes as referenced above.

In my current role as an MLS coach/employee, it is irresponsible to make public references about other clubs, their players, staff or owners.  Seems I was still wearing last year’s hat when writing that pre-match analysis and should have known better.

Sincerely,
Tim

OAKLAND, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes have spent the early part of the 2009 season desperately trying to figure out what has ailed them. First it was the offense. Then it was the defense. But what has become abundantly clear in the last few weeks is that the biggest problem the Quakes are facing is a massive lack of self-belief, and that failing was front and center in the team’s 1-1 tie with Los Angeles on Saturday.
