The receipt of Andre Luiz’s International Transfer Certificate wasn’t the only good news San Jose received on Friday. The sight of Ryan Johnson and Ramiro Corrales both back in full training also warmed the heart of Quakes manager Frank Yallop.

Earthquakes reunion weekend offers a chance to get the band back together
By Jay Hipps · July 28, 2009
This year marks the 35th anniversary of the founding of the San Jose Earthquakes, which entered the NASL in 1974, and this weekend will see nearly 40 former players return, including 11 members of the original 1974 edition. The Earthquakes alumni will be honored at halftime of Sunday’s match against the Seattle Sounders, a game which will also determine the recipient of the inaugural Heritage Cup.
There will be plenty of other opportunities to meet the returning heroes:
- On Thursday, July 30, the Reunion Kick-Off Party takes place at the Duke of Edinburgh Pub at 10801 N. Wolfe Road in Cupertino at 7:30 p.m.
- On Friday, July 31, the main Reunion Party & Celebration will take place at the Downtown Britannia Arms, 173 W. Santa Clara Street in San Jose at 7:00 p.m. This will be the largest gathering of players and fans of the weekend and, as event organizer Ron Gilmore says, if you can only come to one reunion event, this is the one!
- On Saturday, August 1, the NASL Earthquakes reunite at 11:00 a.m. for a match at the San Jose State soccer practice fields, across 10th Street from Spartan Stadium. The public is invited to attend; bring a lawn chair if you’d like to sit while you watch the game.
I had a chance to talk with Gilmore, the man responsible for coordinating the event, about the big weekend. Listen to the interview here:
In other news:
- SI.com’s Jonah Freedman reports that Arturo Alvarez is moving closer to a switch to El Salvador’s national team.
- Metro’s Gary Singh reviews The Beckham Experiment. (We’re a little late with this one but passing it along anyway.)
- U.S. President Barack Obama and FIFA president Sepp Blatter met in Washington, DC yesterday, the former lobbying for the U.S. bid to host the World Cup in 2018 or 2022 and the latter inviting the American head of state to attend next year’s tournament in South Africa. USA Today has the story.

Monday Gold Pride, Earthquakes news
By Jay Hipps · July 27, 2009
The inaugural season of FC Gold Pride will end without playoffs after yesterday’s match against St. Louis Athletica ended in a 1-1 draw. FCGP had a lot of chances in the first half but couldn’t convert and eventually fell behind on a 28th minute goal from Niki Cross. Christine Sinclair equalized in the 87th minute for the lionesses but it wasn’t enough to keep the team’s post-season hopes alive.
You can find brief match reports at the Mercury News and the St. Louis Post Dispatch.

The Solar-Powered Soccer Blog comes sans soundtrack today, but we do have this video clip from Peru’s victory over Argentina in international women’s volleyball. (Yes, really — just watch it.)
Not sure why the clip repeats itself three times but still, quite a move.

A couple bits of Earthquakes news:
- Ryan Johnson is scheduled for further examination of his shoulder today. The diagnosis on Saturday night after the match was that he suffered a mild separation of his left shoulder. We’ll report his prognosis as soon as we know it.
- It’s not clear exactly when Arturo Alvarez will return to the lineup. Alvarez tweaked a hamstring in practice on Friday and sat out last weekend’s match against DC United. Head trainer Bruce Morgan told me Saturday night that even mild hamstring injuries tend to take more than a week for recovery, so we may not see Alvarez against Seattle, either.
