Monday morning news wrap: Sinclair brace leads WPS all-stars

By Jay Hipps · August 31, 2009

Riding a two-goal second-half performance from FC Gold Pride’s Christine Sinclair, the WPS All-Stars defeated Umea IK of Sweden 4-2 yesterday in St. Louis. Sinclair scored the game winner in the 47th minute off a cross from the L.A. Sol’s Marta, then followed up with an unassisted tally just a minute later. She missed a chance at a hat-trick when her 69th minute shot rocked the crossbar.

You can find match reports in Soccer America, Southern Illinois newspaper The Telegraph, and SI.com, while BigAppleSoccer.com also highlights Sinclair specifically.

Meanwhile, on the Earthquakes front, Goal.com’s Kyle McCarthy takes a look at the travails of San Jose’s back line this season in his weekend recap piece. Frank Dell’Apa of the Boston Globe focuses on Wells Thompson, who curled a left-footed shot past San Jose’s Joe Cannon and into the side netting to win the game for New England on Saturday.

That’s it for today, short and sweet. The Earthquakes don’t take the field in MLS action again until Friday, September 18, nearly three weeks from now, although they will play two exhibition matches between now and then: This Friday, they’ll play a Bay Area all-star team, El Sueño de tu Vida (the Dream of Your Life) at PAL Stadium in San Jose and on Tuesday, September 8, El Salvador’s CD Aguila comes to Buck Shaw Stadium.

(These exhibitions are useful for building the fan base, of course, but who puts the MLS schedule together? Three weeks between league matches? You’ve got to be kidding. And this from the league that says the calendar is too crowded to observe FIFA’s international calendar?)

Another road game and another loss for San Jose. Let’s cut to the chase and jump right into post-game stories:

- You can find match reports in the Mercury News, the Boston Globe, the Boston Herald, Goal.com, and MLSnet.com, as well as a minute-by-minute blog in the Globe.

- There’s a post-game story on MLSnet.com, too.

- Former Earthquake Pablo Campos started for Real Salt Lake last night against Kansas City and bagged the game’s only goal, his second for the Royals. He was profiled last Wednesday in the Deseret News.

In a performance that echoes many of the disappointments suffered so far this season, the San Jose Earthquakes fell 2-1 to the New England Revolution tonight in Foxboro, Mass., thanks to some opportunistic play by the home side to break a late deadlock and, minutes later, a moment of brilliance to seal the result.

After a first half that saw the Quakes outplay the Revolution in almost every aspect of the game, the loss was especially frustrating to San Jose coaches and players.

“In the first half we came out strong and created enough good chances to get a goal, but we didn’t have the final touch that we needed,” explained Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop. “They came into the game a bit in the second half and we got punished for our mistakes, something that we didn’t do to them in the first half. We need to score when we are having a good spell.” Read more…

Game day press roundup, New England edition

With the Quakes out of town since Thursday, it’s been a relatively quiet week here at the Solar-Powered Soccer Blog, so I’ve been working on a couple new projects. We’ll be unveiling one of them in the next week or so here on CLS; the other is an idea I have for a great new movie. Picture this: a human and alien meet and have a torrid but short-lived affair. My tentative title: District 9 1/2 Weeks. Read more…

Yallop leaning towards Corrales to replace Hernandez

By Jeff Carlisle · August 28, 2009

Quakes manager Frank Yallop stopped short of saying Ramiro Corrales would definitely start at center back on Saturday against New England, but all signs are pointing in that direction.

Corrales at center back? It could happen

By Jeff Carlisle · August 27, 2009

I’m still in the process of trying to get a hold of Frank Yallop ahead of Saturday’s tilt against New England, but rumor has it that Ramiro Corrales could be the one to replace the suspended Jason Hernandez.

What South Africa wants from hosting

By Jay Hipps · August 26, 2009

Next year’s tournament will not be the first world cup to be held in South Africa. One of the more important events in the young country’s history — and not just in terms of sports — was the Rugby World Cup of 1995.

That tournament began just over a year after Nelson Mandela’s inauguration as president, and the bonds that held the fledgling democracy together were still tenuous. The psyche of the country was split; long-time political rivals viewed each other suspiciously and, despite Mandela’s advocacy of a “non-racial” South Africa, few people really knew what the day-to-day realities of that lofty ideal would entail. Sunday press wrap, Wizards edition

By Jay Hipps · August 23, 2009

As plans continue for the dedication of a new Chris Wondolowski statue at the entrance to Buck Shaw Stadium, we note the following stories in the news today:

- You can find match reports in the Mercury News, the Kansas City Star, and from our own Jeff Carlisle on MLSnet.com. Carlisle also has a post-game piece on MLSnet.com.

-  The WPS championship match yesterday saw Sky Blue FC carry away the trophy after defeating the L.A. Sol, 1-0. The LA Times and SoccerAmerica have match reports.

Apologies for the shortness of today’s blog, but here’s today’s soundtrack: a great song and also a clue about just why today’s entry is abbreviated.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Soccer may be an international game, but sometimes, the right players can be found very close to home. That was the case in San Jose’s dramatic 1-0 win over Kansas City Saturday night at Buck Shaw Stadium.

Chris Wondolowski, who hails from nearby Danville, scored in second half stoppage time off a cross from Salinas product Ramiro Corrales, and Los Altos’ Joe Cannon delivered a massive performance in goal to give the Quakes a rare, late win. It marked just the second time all season that San Jose had won a match when tied at half-time. Read more…
