Same old song for the Quakes
By Jay Hipps · September 28, 2009
Looking at some of these quotes about yesterday’s match and it’s easy to see that the Quakes are still quite far from getting their act together:
- “It’s devastating, this loss. From here, it’s tough to get over this one.”
- “We came out flat in the second half… It’s thoroughly disappointing. I have to go back and evaluate whether I had the right blend of guys on the field.”
- “We’ve put ourselves in a bad spot. We’ve let ourselves down and we’ve got to find our way out of it.”
- “I thought our energy was terrible in the second half. And they came out with a little bit of bite, and we did not adjust to it. We just stayed in a lull, and it wasn’t until they scored that we realized that we had to get back into the game.”
Wait — what’s that? These are quotes from DC United personnel? The Quakes won on the road, after going winless in their last 20?
That changes everything!

Here’s the press wrap from yesterday’s big win:
- You’ll find match reports from MLSnet.com, the Mercury News, the Washington Times, the Washington Post, and Goal.com.
- Post-game stories are available from MLSnet.com and Goal.com.
- The inch-perfect free kick taken by Ramón Sánchez to score San Jose’s first is up for Goal of the Week. (Unfortunately for him, Fredy Montero scored a long-range bomb that will almost certainly take home the prize.)

why didn’t cannon play?
is he injured?
Nope, not injured. I don’t know for certain but I would guess that Frank Yallop wanted to give Weber a shot. Also, the next time Cannon starts, he will pass former Quake Richard Mulrooney in career starts for the Earthquakes. It’s possible they wanted that to happen at home and not on the road.
i think.
Go Cannon!
Not only did the Quakes win on the road, but they had 2 goals disallowed. In the first half RJ scored but was called offside on a call that looked, on the replay, to be the wrong call. And, in the second half, RJ’s goal, again, was disallowed as the ref blew his whistle while the ball was IN THE AIR moving toward the goal, albeit on a deflection, because Wicks was on the ground injured.
I’ve been a critic of the Quakes most of the year but they seem to be playing with some passion which wasn’t evident earlier on. I must give kudos to FY and JD.
Jay, you see them in practice. Has the attitude really changed or are we just seeing an anomaly?
time to lock up ramon sanchez to a long term deal! i like our new Salvadoran posse!
@WK - From the looks of it, Arturo enjoys being a new Salvadoran, too!
@Doug - I actually have not been to practice in a month or so now that we have Robert Jonas doing interviews for the podcast. My sense of things is that the team’s chemistry and confidence are both getting stronger, though. (You might ask Carlisle the next time he appears…)
