Corrales inks new deal
By Jeff Carlisle · October 23, 2009
Last week head coach Frank Yallop revealed that the only current player the team still had to sign for next season was Ramiro Corrales. Following today’s practice, the defender from nearby Salinas revealed he had put pen to paper on a new deal with the Quakes.
“I like the way the team is going,” said Corrales. “I like Frank [Yallop], the coaching staff, and I like John [Doyle]. I want to retire here at home. Hopefully I’ve got a couple more years in me, and then just call it a career.”
My take? This is a good move on the part of management and the player. Granted, Corrales struggled in midfield this season, but the mistake of pairing him with Bobby Convey in the center of the park should be laid at the feet of the coaching staff, rather than on Corrales. That was a combination that was never going to work given the amount of ground Corrales would have to cover. Once that experiment was abandoned, the team couldn’t settle on a central pairing until Ramon Sanchez and Andre Luiz arrived. Ever since moving to his more natural position of left back, Corrales has looked more steady, and been more consistent.
While details of the deal were not disclosed, my guess is that Corrales probably took a modest pay cut to stick around. That should free up even more salary cap room for next season. We’ll know for sure when the MLS Player’s Union updates their salary information.

Ramiro had a great season in ‘08. In ‘09 he was timid, didn’t tackle well, didn’t challenge other players. I would love for him to find his ‘08 form, but I don’t think it’s going to happen. I’m sure he loves Frank too! What other coach would continue to start a player who turned in one lousy performance after another? And it wasn’t just the pairing of Ramiro and Convey in center midfield that sucked. Ramiro and Elliott together sucked. Ramiro and Ribeiro together sucked. Ramiro and Sanchez or anyone else in center midfield sucked because Ramiro has played very poorly all season.
You want to play him at left back?! Why? We should have started Zaher every possible match from July on. That way he’d gain experience and cohesion with the other defenders. He’s much less expensive than Ramiro, he’s faster, he has a better cross, he gets forward better and recovers faster. Sure he’s still rough, but Zaher could be our starting left back for years to come. Ramiro won’t be.
ugh!
go quakes
wow…what f-ing pathetic news!…..hey you’ve had a crappy year, why don’t we sign you on for an extension?!….Mark has it right, in giving the spot to Zaher, he’s much cheaper, faster, hungrier, better crosser, i just don’t know if to care anymore. corrales better have taking a BIG paycut! convey should be next in taking a BIG paycut, but knowing our coaching staff he’ll probably get a raise!!!!
Ha, we’re dead last and still hanging on to players that got us there.
Un-freaking-believable! What the hell are frank and john smoking? Resigning “trainwreck” Corrales for 2010 is about the stupidest move they’ve made and that’s saying a lot!
WTF is this? This guy did nothing for the Quakes this year. Right on Doyle, oh and Yallop too. 2010 will be another dismal season.
I don’t know what you guys are talking about. Corrales was pretty horrible in the begginnig of the year, but he’s one of the better left backs in the league. He’s a good header of the ball, he does have a good eye for a cross, and his tackling is very good (his slide tackling on the wing is pretty sweet). The only problem is he is not as fast as he used to be, and can get caught upfield or punished if he hesitates, but as long as convey tracks back, or the CM’s shift over when he pushes up, it’s fine.
His leadership and experience is also very valuable, he’s played LB for most of his career abroad and for the nats on occasion.
The only thing Corales is still good at is firing a rocket shot about 30 feet over the crossbar from close range. Questionale move. Like the others have said, Zaher has nothing but upside and Corales best days are well behind us.
Upside? I was just thinking that if he took a substantial pay cut maybe he is more attractive to someone in the expansion draft… If they choose to protect him I will be speechless… God help us. Another scenario, maybe he is next years Nick Garcia and we dump him mid-season for a 3rd round draft pick…
Anyone knows the line ups for todays game?!?
This is a smart move if only because you should try to keep veterans who know the league. At least he’ll be a good backup.
But I would be shocked to see him on the protected list for the Expansion Draft. This move is okay; that move would be a mistake.
I’m glad we are able to keep Corrales for another couple of years at a reduced salary. He is far better than Zaher positionally and on the ball. He provides leadership along with Leitch and Hernandez to the back line. At the left fullback position he has been great, and paired with a good C-mid, he was very good last year. Good move for the Quakes!!!! I don’t believe in giving a position to youth without a demonstration that they are superior.
Maybe they’re planning to keep him on as a coach.
This Just mad my day wow can we be the golden state warriors of mls one bone heade move after another. I agree with starting zaher he is a much better option or maybe we can sign Ian Russell or Ronnie eklund…… Wait they are in the payroll already never mind we need to move on from the past and look at the future
It’s time to start calling out the Quakes management team, Doyle and Yallop, for the miserable job they’ve done. How they can say the core of the team is in place, when they were SO pathetic even toward the end of the year, is really unaccceptable. They may have tied a few games toward the end of the year, but that doesn’t mask the MISERABLE job the front office has done this year.
Doyle and Yallop kept shuffling players in an out all year to hide the fact they had no idea how to develop a winning team. There are very few keepers on this club: Salinas, Leitch, Cannon, Hernandez, maybe Glen, Johnson, McDonald.
We have NO midfield. They like Andres Luiz who made NO assists and NO goals. Ramon Sanchez is WAY overrated. Bobby Convey was a huge/expensive disappointment.
my guess is corrales is now making closer to the $100k mark- what’s the league minimum for a veteran like him anyway? everybody clamoring for zaher needs to take a big spoonful of reality– 2-3 decent showings doesn’t make him a lock starter. as mentioned earlier, he’s still got some positioning skills to learn, but having him behind two 29+ yr old outside backs is a good thing. once corrales moved to LB, our backline solidified somewhat and we finished 5-4-5 since the break. if we’d done that all year we’d be in the playoffs, ala’ RSL at 11-12-7.
ahh, don’t pay any attention to me- i’m the damned eternal optimist.
Unbelievable.
Some of this is about the fact that Corrales bleeds blue when it comes to the Quakes. Also, he’s from Salinas, so its doubtful he would ever follow Garcia’s footsteps. Getting traded means moving your family and your whole life, which in Ramiro’s case is right here.
I suspect that this is as much about retaining him as a team leader, a role for which he is aptly fit, and less about what he’ll deliver on the field. I think he was retained for what he can provide off the field, and unless they keep him as captain, he will probably become more reliable as a sub, coming in when he has the energy to bring his experience to bear on the game.
No question he had a lot of bad days this season, but let’s face it: it was the 2009 Quakes so its not like any of our guys had that many good days.
I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up in Ian Russell’s role, or something similar.
As for Yallop, I think he’s got one more year to become the Frank Yallop that we were hoping for. I really want that to happen as I really like his style, and I know he has it in him. Is it fair to suggest that maybe Doyle as GM is a bit questionable? I got nothing against him, and I don’t want to be unfair - maybe he’s oodling with GM talent, but for some reason, to me he seemed a little bit green for that job. You have to admit that we have had a lot of really bad players come through (Adam Smarte??? Whose idea was was that?? I will never forget watching him run around the field carrying his shoe. ), and maybe that’s partially Frank’s fault, but it seems like Frank always had a good eye for talent.
