Quakes hire Watson as assistant

By Jeff Carlisle · January 7, 2010

Per the team’s press release, the San Jose Earthquakes are set to hire Mark Watson as an assistant coach.

The move sees Watson reunited with Quakes head coach Frank Yallop, as the two were teammates at international level for Canada.

Watson made 78 appearances for Canada, and spent most of his club career with USL-1 sides after spending time in England and MLS. As a coach, he spent several seasons as a  player/assistant with the USL-1’s Charleston Battery. He was most recently on the books of the New England Revolution after their assistant, Paul Mariner, departed in midseason to join the staff of English side Plymouth Argyle.

“I am excited to join the coaching staff for the Earthquakes,” said Watson. “I am looking forward to working with Frank, Ian (Russell), Jason (Batty) and Ronnie (Ekelund) and helping this team get to the level that it wants to be at.”

But we already know what level the team wants to be at - mediocre, bottom of the table, and never threaten to make a run at the play-offs. DOn’t need a new assistant coach to figure that out!

Good move Ian and Ronnie are way in over their heads this might bring more stability to the coaching ranks that frank needed, like Dom did for frank and now Spencer for Dom

As a player, Watson was a very strong defender … perhaps Yallop will utilize him to solidfy the Defense?
