Report: Quakes bring Gjertsen on board
By Jeff Carlisle · January 21, 2010
According to a published report, the San Jose Earthquakes have tapped their Canadian connection once again to land former Montreal Impact midfielder Joey Gjertsen.
A report in the Quebec-based Rue Fontenac stated that Gjertsen, 27, has reached an agreement with San Jose, where he would be reunited with two other former Impact players, midfielder Antonio Ribeiro and goalkeeper Andrew Weber.
The same report goes on to state that Gjertsen is a brilliant but somewhat enigmatic player, who is inclined to take people on as much as possible. Sounds suspiciously like Dwayne De Rosario when he first entered the league, or current Quake Arturo Alvarez.
Last season Gjertsen recorded three goals and no assists in 29 appearances, 16 of them starts.
When asked about the report, a Quakes spokesman would only go so far as to say “there has been contact, but nothing is official until we get league approval.”
Sounds like Gjertsen is definitely on his way.

Wow I thought maybe for once we could be linked to a good signing like maybe Vincenzo Bernardo or Raul , some glimmer of hope at least to let us know that the fo. Is really trying! Stick ur nose out there FO! Make some Fu@@ing noise in this transfer market please! Not like we don’t have holes to fill, wait let’s resign corrales that might help our backline, and let’s let zaher rot on the bench! And let’s expose salinas in the draft…… Wait ….. Managment already has done all of that!?
Great - a midfielder with no assists from a top notch league. We’re going to the play-offs in 2010 now, no doubt about it…
He seems like he has some skills. I found this on youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tuSt7uLBimk
Check it out. Thats our boy.
“Tantôt brillant, tantôt exaspérant par sa manie de vouloir dribbler tout le monde en s’imaginant sur un court de basket-ball (son sport favori…) et en oubliant que le soccer est un jeu collectif, Joey Gjertsen a été placé dans la pointe offensive du milieu en losange de Marc Dos Santos avec des résultats à l’avenant”
Okay… this is a bit scary… ‘Sometimes brilliant, sometimes exasperating because he basically keeps the ball to himself imagining himself on a basketball court (his favourite sport) and forgets that soccer is a team sport.’ Go Quakes ! The article doesn’t make it seem like they are sad to see him go or that they fought to keep him. That doesn’t give me warm fuzzies. *sigh*
i’ll be the first to admit to feeling frustrated with the underwhelming nature of the quakes moves over the last two seasons, but i have finally decided to dispense with all of the needless hand-wringing….i really don’t care where these guys come from, only that when they get here that they are able to make an impact (pun intended) at the MLS level…if they don’t, then i expect heads will roll…..lew will soon realize that he’ll never see the fan support he craves as long as he tries to peddle a crappy product….they don’t have to be big names as long as they get results
We should be looking in Central America. Sanchez is good and affordable. Two or three more like him would make a big difference for us. — Doyle said he was trying to sign two South Americans and two Europeans. I really hope that those guys come through and are good because USL guys mostly are not good enough to start in MLS. — This looks like another signing just to make it look like Doyle is trying, as opposed to actually achieving. Color me disappointed.
Stop complaining! We just landed a player who started the majority of games for the 2010 league champions, lead his team in points during a deep CONCACAF Champions League run, and has won at every level. Try doing some research before making judgements. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joey_Gjertsen
finally someone who will take somebody on instead of playing a 40 yard long ball to nobody.
@bmack, that was the silver lining i took from the article as well. while joey’s production during the regular season was fairly poor, it did appear that he thrived in the big game situations. now all he has to do is realize that every game is a big game, and maybe being surrounded by some better talent helps his game as well
How about breaking some ground on a new stadium like just about every other new team in the league!
bmack18654 - I sure hope that you are right and that my pessimism is misplaced. I’ve seen Gjertsen play in USL and he’s got some stuff. The question is how well it translates to MLS. If nothing else, his signing ramps up the competition in camp for roster spots. Ribeiro turned out to be better than I thought he would, so maybe Joey will exceed my expectations too. — Doyle promises us four overseas signings, so I’m hopeful. — As for CCL, I’ve been hoping that we would raid some of the Central American teams that did well in that competition. We got to watch them go up against some of the better MLS sides, so we ought to be able to find a good player or three on those squads.
From the Merc article on Gjertson:
“San Jose hopes to announce three more offseason signings but none have been officially approved by Major League Soccer yet.”
Any thoughts on the Eduardo possibility the merc is reporting?

Wanted to make a comment that the Montreal Impact player stats is not up to date. Joey scored a few more goals/assists than that and every year he led the team in assists.
