Ryan Johnson scores for Jamaica against Argentina

By Robert Jonas · February 11, 2010

While his Earthquakes teammates struggled to find the back of the net in a preseason game against the Kansas City Wizards, forward Ryan Johnson notched his first international goal in Jamaica’s 2-1 loss at Argentina. Following a towering cross toward the edge of the penalty area, Johnson positioned himself between two defenders and headed the ball toward goal from about 15 yards out. The effort seemed to freeze the Argentine goalkeeper just long enough for the ball to carom off the goalpost and into the net for a 1-0 lead.

Unfortunately for the Reggae Boyz, Johnson’s goal did not hold up, as Diego Maradona’s men staged a furious comeback over the later stages of the second half. After equalizing in the 82nd minute from a Martin Palermo goal, Argentina grabbed the winner late into stoppage time. Ignacio Canuto spared the blushes of the home crowd with the strike, and perhaps saved Maradona another embarrassing press conference.

Check out the highlights in the video below; Johnson’s goal comes near the 1:38 mark.
