Quakes broadcasts to see a lot of changes in 2010
By Jay Hipps · March 11, 2010
The Earthquakes will be making a host of changes to their TV broadcasts this season, both on the screen and behind the mics. Welcome news to San Jose supporters is the news that all match broadcasts in 2010 will be in high definition, a first for the team. Currently, 15 games are scheduled to air on Comcast SportsNet, with 13 on Comcast SportsNet California and one each on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area and Comcast SportsNet Plus. Combined with national TV broadcasts and the MLS Direct Kick pay-per-view package, all 30 Earthquakes games will be available on television.
As for the changes in the broadcast booth, two new faces will be joining the San Jose broadcast team. Jim Kozimor will take over play-by-play duties this year, with John Shrader sliding over one chair to fill the role of analyst. Dan Dibley of KNBR is the team’s new sideline reporter.
Sources at the team were quick to point out that the departure of former Earthquake defender Troy Dayak from the broadcast team comes as a disappointment to all involved. The former center back, known for his grit and determination on the field, is currently pursuing advanced coaching certifications through U.S. Soccer, and that, combined with his other soccer-related activities, simply left no time to participate in the team’s broadcasts this year.
The new team of Shrader, Kozimor, and Dibley will be among the most experienced in Bay Area sports. Shrader, who has been the voice of San Jose soccer on either TV or radio since the launch of MLS in 1996, needs no introduction to Earthquakes supporters. Kozimor currently hosts Comcast SportsNet California’s Raiders Postgame Live, and has handled play-by-play for the Sacramento Kings and Monarchs as well as the Philadelphia 76ers, Houston Rockets, Golden State Warriors and Detroit Pistons during his 20+ year career. Dibley has worked for 15 years in local TV and radio and is currently the morning sports and traffic anchor on KNBR 680.
The team’s broadcast partnership with Comcast SportsNet will also see players and coaches appear as guests on Chronicle Live, as well as highlight packages on SportsNet Reports and SportsNet Central.
Look for the team’s full broadcast schedule to be released soon. (Editor’s note: the full broadcast schedule is now available on the Quakes’ web site.)

So glad that Dayak is gone. Found him kind of boring. Cant wait to have Dibbles on board for full season@
Already missing Kate and Christine LOL…
Dan Dibley worked one of the games last year–good guy…
I hope the new PBP guy learns soccer quick. I like the idea of Shrader as color commentator though, I think it’s probably something he’ll do well.
Dibs!!! great pick up for the TV team.
BTW, will he also provide traffic reports before and after games?
I like “Shrade”, but not sure if he has the soccer chops for color commentator. He’s got the delivery chops and all that, but they will be missing the soccer expertise in the booth a bit I think. My all-time favorite pairing was Shrade / Ray Hudson.
“Kozimor currently hosts Comcast SportsNet California’s Raiders Postgame Live, and has handled play-by-play for the Sacramento Kings and Monarchs as well as the Philadelphia 76ers, Houston Rockets, Golden State Warriors and Detroit Pistons during his 20+ year career”
So he has ZERO experience with soccer or soccer broadcasting, what a perfect choice to replace Mr. Shrader.
@Tom — Actually, he’s called California Cougar games, so he has some experience with indoor soccer. It’s not the same but he’s not completely new to seeing round balls kicked and headed. Also, to be fair, he’s versatile — in addition to the NBA stuff I mentioned in the article, he’s done college basketball and football, high school football, and professional lacrosse and tennis. He also has a radio show on a Sacramento station, KTHK.
This is a totally inadequate TV schedule. There are far too many home games televised and far too few away games televised by Comcast. There is no way I’m buying Direct TV to get away games and I suspect the majority of fans, like me will be without any way of seeing most of the away games Hell, I might just stay away from Buck Shaw and watch the home games on TV. Horrible schedule!
OK Jay, I stand corrected but not placated. I will wait to be unhappy

I wish they could get more away games. I like Dibley, but Shrader in the color comentator is raising my eyebrow.
