U.S. Men’s National Team U-23s: Surprise call-up for San Jose Earthquakes rookie goalkeeper David Bingham

When U.S. Soccer and U-23 head coach Caleb Porter announced the first batch of players invited to this month’s training camp being held in Germany, among the surprises was San Jose Earthquakes first-year goalkeeper David Bingham. Having made only one appearance for the first team in the 2011 regular season, the rookie put together a successful run in the MLS Reserve League, and ha quietly assumed the number two goalkeeping position behind veteran incumbent Jon Busch.

Perhaps more famous for his length-of-the-field goal versus West Bromwich Albion in a summer friendly back in July, Bingham was highly touted out of the University of California, and joined the Quakes as a Generation Adidas signing through a weighted MLS assignment lottery. He spent much of the spring splitting time between training with the Earthquakes and completing classes at Cal toward his degree. When the semester ended in May, Bingham became available to compete full time for the Earthquakes goalkeeping responsibility and also to feature in more important capacity in training sessions.

Getting the call to the USMNT U-23 squad puts Bingham in direct competition with fellow MLS ‘keepers Sean Johnson of the Chicago Fire and Jon Kempin of Sporting Kansas City — along with Ipswich Town netminder Cody Cropper — for a coveted spot on the U.S. Soccer team that will compete in the spring of 2012 for a chance to represent the USA at the 2012 London Olympic Games. Following the November training camp currently underway in Germany, Porter has stated that he will begin to tighten the U-23 roster ahead of Olympic qualifying matches scheduled for March and April. Bingham hopes to be a part of that roster moving forward.

From the Dublin Patch comes a nice feature on Bingham that covers all the facts on the Quakes rookie.

Colleague Matt Schwab goes into a bit more detail on Bingham’s roots in the local soccer scene in this news digest.
