Not only did Steven Lenhart double his 2013 scoring output when he notched both goals in the San Jose Earthquakes critical 2-1 victory at Real Salt Lake last Saturday, but he also named the MLS Player of the Week for his heroics.
As voted on by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR), Lenhart was Player of the Week for week 30 of the 2013 MLS season. It was Lenhart's first such honor of the season, the third of his career, and the second of the season by an Earthquake. Lenhart's Bash Brother teammate Alan Gordon was named MLS Player of the Week following his two-goal performance against the LA Galaxy in the Stanford Stadium California Clasico on June 29.
Steven Lenhart gave the San Jose Earthquakes their second road win of the season Saturday night at Rio Tinto Stadium, keeping their playoff hopes alive. Lenhart scored both goals in a span of four minutes to secure his team a 2-1 win over Real Salt Lake.
In the 18th minute, Cordell Cato sent a driven cross to the top of the penalty spot where Lenhart headed the ball into the bottom right corner of the goal, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Shortly after Real Salt Lake tied the match 1-1, Lenhart reclaimed the lead for the Earthquakes. Shea Salinas' quickly taken free kick in the 21st minute found Lenhart goal side his defender and he headed home the ball to the bottom right corner of the net.
The San Jose Earthquakes are back in action Sunday, September 29 when they face Chivas USA at the StubHub Center (11:00 p.m. ET, UniMás) and the second match of a two-game road swing. Still on the outside of the postseason qualification positions looking in, a win against the Goats is critical to the Earthquakes hopes of qualifying for the MLS Cup playoffs.
The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media. More information and membership information can be found at http://www.soccerreporters.com/.
