And finally, a win

If you had to pick one word to describe the mood in the Earthquakes’ locker room after last night’s win over the Salt Lake Royals, it would be “relief.”

The guys were clearly happy with the solid team effort that gave the team its first win in two months, but there was none of the giddiness that was seen during last season’s 10-game unbeaten streak. Everyone was smiling but there was no music blasting, maybe because they knew that there’s still a big hole to escape if they’re going to see any action in the post-season.

Regardless, a win is a win, and this was an especially welcome one. It pushes the team out of the Western Conference basement (unless Dallas beats Chicago away today, at least) and breaks a chain of futility that has stretched for eight games. It’s not the same as the 1980′s Rolaids commercials, but last night you could spell “relief” W – I – N.

Here’s today’s press wrap:

- There are match reports from MLSnet.com,  the Mercury News, the Salt Lake Tribune, the Deseret News, and Goal.com.

-  FC Gold Pride takes on the Washington Freedom today in Maryland. Kickoff is 1:00 Pacific — you can follow the game on the WPS Match Tracker.

- Ever wanted to sing the National Anthem at a Quakes game? That’s one of the prizes if you win “San Jose’s Got Talent,” a contest sponsored by the SJ Downtown Association. Details here.

Welcome back Joe Cannon. That was a big time save to preserve the win, and it was great to see him celebrating with the fans at the end. Top man! Good all round team effort. Lets hope we have turned the corner.
