Earthquakes Tuesday training report
By Robert Jonas · May 12, 2010
Some quick notes from Earthquakes training out at the new Nutrilite training facility:
- As we discussed last week with General Manager John Doyle, the opening of the new training grounds affords the team the opportunity to schedule more scrimmages with local competition. On Tuesday, the Quakes took on the PSA Los Gatos Storm — a member of U.S. Club Soccer — in a match featuring mostly reserves and guests in the San Jose line-up. The Storm are readying up for a play-in match with the Sonoma County Sol for a berth in the U.S. Open Cup.

In an effort to try something different this week for my preview of the upcoming Earthquakes game against Red Bull New York, I touched bases with my friend Nathaniel Baker over at American Soccer News. As a fellow MLS beat reporter, I thought Nat could fill us in on some of the details surrounding this week’s visitors to Buck Shaw Stadium. So, hearkening back to an old late night television show broadcast from the city that Red Bull claims to be from, we played a game of point/counterpoint over e-mail this week. Read more…

The worst kept secret around Buck Shaw Stadium was finally revealed yesterday, as the Earthquakes announced the signing of forward Scott Sealy to the team. The Trinidad native returns to the Quakes after spending the last 18 months in Israel. In 14 games for San Jose after being acquired from the Kansas City Wizards in the summer of 2008, Sealy scored 3 goals and had 3 assists as the team made near-successful late season run for a spot in the MLS Cup playoffs. With the rain showers finished for the time being, the San Jose Earthquakes practiced this morning in earnest ahead of Wednesday’s Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup play-in game against Real Salt Lake. Nearly everyone was in action on the Buck Shaw Stadium pitch, as the team split into two squads for a full-field scrimmage. Missing this week is defender Ike Opara, who has returned to Wake Forest as part of his drive to complete his studies this semester. New signing Scott Sealy spent much of the session on the sidelines, but is not suffering from any apparent injuries. Read more…
U.S. Open Cup — relevant or distracting?
By Robert Jonas · April 12, 2010
Before the Earthquakes return to MLS action this weekend against the New England Revolution, they welcome back Real Salt Lake to Buck Shaw Stadium for a midweek Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup play-in match. Defeat RSL on Wednesday, and the Quakes advance to face either FC Dallas or DC United on the road with the winner entering the tournament at the round-of-16 stage. For San Jose, maneuvering through these two play-in games successfully would mark their first entry into the Cup tournament since 2005. Read more…
