SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - In a coming out party for striker Javier Hernandez, Mexico demolished Bolivia 5-0 Wednesday night at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. A rising star with Chivas de Guadalajara in his country’s top domestic league, Hernandez scored two goals in the first half to lead Mexico to the easy victory.

Hernandez earned just his second cap with El Tri in this his first start, while the double opened his international scoring account. And despite being substituted at the half, it was an impressive effort for the 21-year-old, who is still considered a long shot to make Mexico’s roster for the upcoming World Cup.

Hernandez was joined on the scoring sheet by midfielder Braulio Luna and forward Pablo Barrera, who each scored in the first half as Mexico took a 4-0 lead into the break. Paul Aguilar, who also recorded two assists on the night, added a second-half goal to complete the scoring. Read more…

What a difference a year makes. Last season at this time, the Earthquakes and Galaxy were together at the bottom of the table in the Western Conference, both with 33 points. This year, the Galaxy’s 2-0 victory in this, the last match of the regular season, gives them the best record in the division, and with it a home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. Meanwhile, San Jose remains at the bottom, looking up, hoping a second-consecutive late-season surge portends greater success next year.

“This was definitely a tough result, a tough way to end the season,” said Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop. “(The Galaxy) are a good side who came out and got a result tonight. We have played well over the last 12 or so games, including this one and this is something we can build off of into next season and I’m excited about that.” Read more…

Quakes battle Chivas USA to 2-2 result on the road

By Jay Hipps · October 17, 2009

The San Jose Earthquakes once again showed their pedigree as spoilers Saturday night, earning a 2-2 tie with first-place Chivas USA at the Home Depot Center in Carson and running their undefeated streak on the road to four games behind a pair of assists from defender Chris Leitch and a strong performance from rookie goalkeeper Andrew Weber.

“It was an interesting and entertaining game, and it’s a good point for us,” said Earthquakes coach Frank Yallop. “I thought it was well-deserved, and it’s good to come to a place like this and score two goals away from home, it was very good. We are on a good run, we have learned as a team to become difficult to break down. This has shown the growth of our team, and we have gotten some good results on the road to show for it.” Read more…

The San Jose Earthquakes have endured plenty of stoppage time heartbreak this season. On Saturday, they delivered a bit of payback, with Cornell Glen’s goal in the second minute of added time allowing the Quakes to rally for a 1-1 tie against Toronto FC. Read more…

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Twenty-six games into the 2009 season, San Jose Earthquakes manager Frank Yallop finally has a defense he can like, even if that means using practically every spare defender on his roster.

On a night when the Quakes paid homage to injured midfielder Darren Huckerby, who is expected to retire at season’s end, the home side defeated the New York Red Bulls, 1-0, before a capacity crowd of 10,525 at Buck Shaw Stadium. Ryan Johnson scored the games only goal with a first-half penalty, one that was given when New York defender Jeremy Hall was adjudged to have upended San Jose forward Arturo Alvarez.

The win extended the Quakes unbeaten streak to four matches, and it marked the first time all year the team has won back-to-back games. Read more…

Second-half strikes from Sanchez, Johnson lead
San Jose to rare road win

By Pete Ratajczak · September 27, 2009

San Jose snapped their 20 game winless streak away from home as second half goals from Ramon Sanchez and Ryan Johnson lifted the Earthquakes to a 2-1 comeback win over D.C. United. “It was a long time coming,” San Jose coach Frank Yallop said. “We have been very close recently to getting a win on the road. I am proud of the guys for continuing to believe in ourselves. We stuck to the task and got a nice three points away from home.”

The win, San Jose’s first on the road win since June 7 of last year, improved the Earthquakes’ record to 3-2-2 since the All-Star break, and dealt host D.C. United a serious setback in their battle for a playoff spot. “It was a great comeback by us and hopefully we can build on this,” Yallop said. Read more…

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquake players gathered around the big-screen television in their locker room and watched intently as the play unfolded. As a Colorado Rapids corner kick floated in, they could see the ball nodded into the path of Rapids’ defender Drew Moor, at which point Ryan Johnson draped his arm around Moor’s shoulder, and appeared pull him back.

Johnson turned away in disgust and claimed “I barely touched him, you know?” Shea Salinas, remote control in hand, went one better, and insisted that Moor was offside when the ball was played to him. Of those claims, Salinas’ seemed to have the most merit. Yet the only opinion that mattered was that of referee Edvin Jurisevic, who signaled for a penalty in second half stoppage time that was rifled home by Rapids’ forward Conor Casey. And instead of celebrating a 1-0 victory, the Quakes were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw that felt like a loss.

In a performance that echoes many of the disappointments suffered so far this season, the San Jose Earthquakes fell 2-1 to the New England Revolution tonight in Foxboro, Mass., thanks to some opportunistic play by the home side to break a late deadlock and, minutes later, a moment of brilliance to seal the result.

After a first half that saw the Quakes outplay the Revolution in almost every aspect of the game, the loss was especially frustrating to San Jose coaches and players.

“In the first half we came out strong and created enough good chances to get a goal, but we didn’t have the final touch that we needed,” explained Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop. “They came into the game a bit in the second half and we got punished for our mistakes, something that we didn’t do to them in the first half. We need to score when we are having a good spell.” Read more…
