SANTA CLARA - At least the Earthquakes’ second home opener was a little better than the first.
At their first game at Buck Shaw Stadium, the resurrected San Jose franchise blistered the FC Dallas defense for nine shots and nine corners but could not break through and had to settle for an entertaining but frustrating goalless draw.

As one walked into the Quakes’ locker room following Saturday’s match with the Chicago Fire, the reactions of the coaches and players made it difficult to tell what had transpired. Manager Frank Yallop was encouraged. Ronnie O’Brien looked slightly annoyed. And then there was Shea Salinas, who looked like he’d just been dumped by his girlfriend.

For San Jose Earthquakes fans, the eagerly anticipated Opening Day promised to be one to remember. Their brand new team came into the Home Depot Center fresh from winning the pre-season Carolina Challenge Cup, and their opponent, the hated LA Galaxy, was not only coming off a 4-0 drubbing in Colorado, but would be without their best defender Abel Xavier (due to a red card in that Colorado game) as well as big time scorer Carlos Ruiz (out with a knee injury). But dreams of glory quickly gave way to the harsh reality of life as a MLS expansion team, as the Earthquakes were dominated by the Galaxy, losing 2-0. Read more

They may be just an expansion team, but the San Jose Earthquakes showed they’re ready for the regular season, completing a three-game sweep of the Carolina Challenge Cup by defeating the New York Red Bulls 3-0 on Saturday night. Early goals in each half staked the Quakes to a 2-0 lead before a late own goal by New York defender Erik Brunner upped the final margin. The result at Blackbaud Stadium in Charleston, S.C., saw the Quakes come away with a 4-1-2 pre-season record with one match to go, an exhibition next week against the Portland Timbers.
