Quakes taking “wait and see” approach on Zinha

By Jeff Carlisle · April 23, 2008

The San Jose Earthquakes’ interest in Mexican international Antonio “Zinha” Naelson has cooled somewhat in recent days, with G.M John Doyle admitting that the MLS side would be adopting a “wait and see” attitude.

“We’re just going to see where we are with Peguero [Jean Philippe] coming in and some other things that we have going on,” said Doyle. “We hadn’t really looked at players in [Zinha’s] price range as extensively as we should. Knowing what it will cost us, you start to evalute. If we’re in, say, the $1 million range for a player, that opens some windows to a lot more players.”

Doyle indicated that he wasn’t closing the door completely on the Toluca attacker, and that Zinha had impressed while playing for Mexico in last week’s friendly with China. But with the Mexican league playoffs set to begin in mid-May, Doyle will be taking a bit more time to analyze his options.

“We’ll see where we are in the next three to four weeks with things,” Doyle added.
