Wanted: Exorcist. Apply at Buck Shaw Stadium.
By Jay Hipps · July 13, 2008
We’ll begin today with a message from blues immortal Albert King:
Born under a bad sign
I’ve been down since I began to crawl
If it wasn’t for bad luck
I wouldn’t have no luck at all
Yes, it’s come to this. If something happens once, you take notice. Twice, maybe it’s a coincidence. Three times, it could be a pattern. When it happens eleventy hundred times (thanks, Jon Stewart and Steve Carell, for inventing a new number), it’s time to do something — anything — to change things. Thus, we give you today’s headline, although the team really needs a “lucksorcist” more than an exorcist, strictly speaking.
The bad luck started just a few minutes into the team’s season, when Ryan Cochrane scored a perfectly good goal against the Galaxy only to see it called back for no reason. The latest example came yesterday, when a foul committed by Conor Casey against Jason Hernandez went unnoticed, allowing Casey a free header in the box that he put past Joe Cannon and into the net.
“I had good position and I felt some contact,” Hernandez told the Mercury News. “I thought it was a foul. Frank Yallop thought it was a foul and had something to say about it. It’s a tough one to swallow. It was another unlucky day.”
So, how does a team change its luck? Let’s hope it involves men named Huckerby and Lima, and that it starts as soon as possible.
