Quakes Cast Episode 3: Shea Salinas speaks out on injury in exclusive interview
The San Jose Earthquakes continued their hot start to the season with an important 2-2 draw on the road against the New York Red Bulls, but most of the talk after the match was about the injuries suffered by the Quakes. Big Vic Bernardez went down with a sprained medial collateral ligament, while Shea “Speed” Salinas was crushed by Red Bulls defensive midfielder Rafa Marquez and had his collarbone broken into four pieces. Both players will be out for up to two months, and the Earthquakes will need to adjust in a hurry as they prepare to welcome MLS Western Conference leaders Real Salt Lake to Buck Shaw Stadium this Saturday evening.
On this week’s episode, cohosts Kelly Gray and Robert Jonas welcome the injured Shea Salinas in his first sit down interview following the devastating injury suffered at Red Bull Arena. Salinas gives a play-by-play of the whole affair, and even shares a picture of the compound fracture to his clavicle. Sure, photos during a podcast do not make for good theatre, so give yourself to play a little theatre of the mind and just imagine what the X-ray must look like. Bottom line” not pretty.
Kelly and Robert finish their look at the New York game, as well as turn their attention forward to the weekend tilt against Real Salt Lake. The fact that the Earthquakes are playing to take the conference lead shows how much the improvements to the roster have transformed the team leading off 2012. With Salinas and Bernardez relegated to the DL for the time being, that depth will be tested against RSL. However, with first place on the line, anything is bound to happen.
