The inevitable finally happened this past Tuesday evening, as the Red Bulls 2-0 victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy made official that the San Jose Earthquakes could not qualify for the 2011 MLS Cup playoffs. That the elimination occurred in conjunction with a Galaxy loss made it somewhat bearable for some, everyone agrees that the time has come to look ahead to next season. In the meantime, the Quakes have three games left on the 2011 schedule — three games to work some guys into the line-up that to this point have been patiently biding their time.
Following Kelly and Robert’s breakdown of the draw against Sporting Kansas City, the duo welcome the winner of the Earthquakes’ Krazy George competition — The Jester — to the podcast to discuss his experience last Saturday night at Buck Shaw Stadium. The long-time fan of the club, who revealed that he has been wearing his trademark jester hat to Earthquakes games for many years, was awarded the opportunity to lead the crowd along with Krazy George himself in cheering on the Earthquakes against the SportKCs. A regular at leading section 103 in pumping up the volume all season long, The Jester relished the chance to lend his efforts to the whole stadium.
With a match this Saturday against the New England Revolution on the schedule, Robert checks in with the Boston Herald’s Kyle McCarthy to get the low-down on the happenings out in Foxboro. Kyle’s work on the Revs can also be found at mlssoccer.com, and his musings on MLS can be found regularly at goal.com. With the Revolution missing standout goalkeeper Matt Reis this weekend, the opportunity is ripe for the Earthquakes to test the shaky defense of New England and for Chris Wondolowski to perhaps climb back into the MLS Golden Boot conversation. Just two goals back with three games to play, Wondo needs a late season run of form to retain his title.
Do Robert, Kelly, and Joe have all the answers? They certainly share their opinions this week on Episode 27 of the Quakes Cast. But it is not all about them; please share your comments and questions below and on Twitter to @QuakesCast.
