Just as the San Jose Earthquakes needed stoppage time to dispatch of Real Salt Lake last Saturday night, this week’s QuakesCast cannot be contained by the simple measure of time. Instead, Episode 4 goes deep into extra time to provide a smorgasbord of information, entertainment, and a plethora of guests. Kelly Gray and Robert Jonas, normally a dynamic duo in their own right, are joined by special guest Chris Leitch. The trio get things started with a breakdown of the Earthquakes' dramatic 3-1 win over Real Salt Lake and share their impressions of the Quakes' best ever start to an MLS season. A look at San Jose's man-of-the-match against RSL — think marauding left sided defender — and the rest of the boys in Blue-and-Black blend seamlessly into exclusive QuakesCast interview with midfield maestro Simon Dawkins.
The second half of the show kicks off with much love for Chris Wondolowski, as the crew marvels at the run of form the Quakes' MVP has been on since late last season. Now up to 16 goals in his last 16 games, some are trying to remember the last time Wondo did not find the back of the net. Given the near certainty by which it seems Wondolowski scores a goal every game, Kelly brings up the excellent point that there has never been a run the likes that Wondo has put together in the history of the San Jose Earthquakes. Currently sharing the top spot in MLS for scoring along with New York Red Bulls forward Thierry Henry, Wondolowski next faces a resurgent Philadelphia Union this Saturday afternoon.
Looking ahead to that weekend match, Jonathan Tannenwald of The Goalkeeper blog on Philly.com joins Robert to share an insider's view of the Earthquakes next opponent. Whereas San Jose has gotten off to a terrific start to 2011, the Union are still trying to get their footing early in the season. Coming off a short-handed 1-0 victory at Chivas USA, Philadelphia will be looking to extend their winning streak to three matches, but they will have to contend with the Earthquakes attempts to stretch their own unbeaten streak to six games.
The QuakesCast is always open to questions from listeners, so keep the conversation going with your comments and questions on Twitter. Kelly and Robert will get to the best questions and comments from Earthquakes fans each and every week of the season, so get involved today!
