With the March 3rd kick-off to the San Jose Earthquakes season less than 3 weeks away, previews of the team are bursting forth like cherry blossoms along the Potomac. Brilliant in scope as their appearance is clustered in that short period between winter and spring, MLS season previews blanket the Internet in written form, but also send forth into the air their fragrant aroma via radio and podcast.
In the first half of this week, Robert Jonas has been a frequent quest on podcasts and radio in previewing the Earthquakes defense of the Supporters’ Shield. The roster may not see many changes from last year, but the situation in 2013 is much different. Can the "overachieving" Quakes of 2012 come even close to matching their record setting ways this time around?
The wonderfully succinct podcast, MLS in 30, welcomed Jonas onto their Tuesday broadcast to talk Quakes. Part of the NASN radio network, MLS in 30 features Garrett Cleverly and Jon Arnold as hosts, and as the show title suggests, they provide a weekly 30 minute show that focuses in on a few select MLS stories from the week. And not just talk, the hosts also provide some legit music to boot. Joining Jonas as a guest on this week’s show was Thomas Floyd breaking down DC United’s preseason training preparations.
Next up was an appearance on the weekly Talk Timbers show on 750 AM The Game in Portland, OR. Jonas had the pleasure of talking with Dan Sheldon, filling in for regular host Fletcher Johnson, ahead of the Earthquakes visit to Portland for the Timbers preseason tournament. The Quakes — at least the healthy players — will look to that tournament as the last step toward achieving readiness for the season opener a week later. Expect the training camp roster of trialists and draft picks to have thinned out by that time.
And to wrap up a busy day on the talk radio circuit, Jonas joined up with venerable podcaster Daniel Feuerstein as part of his big Feuersteins Fire MLS season preview show. Based in New York, and an ardent follower of the happenings around Red Bull Arena, Feuerstein has compiled an extensive two-part MLS preview, which features some of the other personalities from around the SB Nation MLS network, that is definitely worth a listen.
Want more San Jose Earthquakes talk radio in the coming year? With the demise of the club’s official podcast, The Quakes Cast, the void in the airwaves will soon be filled with a new show dedicated to sharing all the news and views that matter around Buck Shaw Stadium and beyond. So hang tight for now, and be on the lookout for an announcement for the new show in the next few weeks.
