The highlights speak for themselves: This was not a game for the defenses. But, as San Jose Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop preached last year and new Portland Timbers head coach Caleb Porter desires this season, both teams came out with the singular goal of scoring multiple goals.
Chris Wondolowski, Victor Bernardez, and Mike Fucito scored for the visitors, while former Earthquakes forward Ryan Johnson notched a hat-trick for Portland. A possible future Earthquake made the start as Spurs trialist John Bostock played 60 minutes in the match and was instrumental in setting up the Quakes equalizing goal. And the best player on the pitch for San Jose was winger Shea Salinas, whose hustle play along the sidelines confounded the Timbers defenders time and time again.
