After the Ultimate Goonie Game at Stanford last year, when the San Jose Earthquakes came back with the 3-2 victory, expectations were high for this year's California Clasico. On Saturday night Gyasi Zardes's second half goal was enough to ensure the Galaxy's victory over the Quakes 1-0. San Jose remains in eighth position of the Western Conference.
The Earthquakes were missing Chris Wondolowski (busy in Brazil preparing for the round of sixteen with the US men's national team), Victor Bernardez, recovering from World Cup duty for Honduras, Clarence Goodson, who was a late scratch after suffering a groin strain during warm-ups, and Shea Salinas, out with a lower abdominal muscle issue.
The Earthquakes three-game home stand continues with a Wednesday night match against Chivas USA on July 2nd at Buck Shaw Stadium, with kick off at 7:30 PM.
