It was not the best test for the U.S. women's national team, not with the FIFA Women's World Cup less than a month away, but Ireland did put up enough of a fight in a 3-0 decision that favored the Yanks. A brace of goals (and broken noses) from Abby Wambach provided the capacity crowd at Avaya Stadium with a special memory on Mother's Day, and San Jose provided the perfect locale for the USWNT showcase. A perfect afternoon? Without a doubt.
With a cup of coffee at hand, and a microphone between them, Robert Jonas of Center Line Soccer and host Colin Etnire of Football.com sat down to talk about the women's international friendly as part of The Aftershock podcast. Not content to stop there, they continued on with a slew of San Jose Earthquakes news items, including a look ahead to the team's Saturday match against the Columbus Crew at Avaya Stadium.
The Earthquakes are fourth in the Western Conference at the moment, a lofty position given that they played 7 of their first 10 games of the season on the road, so Colin and Robert assess what has worked to this point for Dominic Kinnear's squad. Have we seen the best of the Quakes so far, or does Kinnear have more moves up his sleeve in establishing San Jose as a postseason contender? Not an easy question to answer, but caffeine-fueled opinions were shared as to just what the ceiling for the Earthquakes might be.
And if that wasn't an interesting enough conversation, the pair finish up their coffees with a look at what to expect when San Jose lines up against Kei Kamara and the Crew. Points against the Eastern Conference are a bit of a bonus, though points at home are a necessity. Who will come out on top? Be sure to listen through to the predictions.
