The U.S. men's national team plays its first match of 2016 today, facing off against European surprises Iceland in a match at the StubHub center in Carson, CA. Looking to build up the youth ranks of the U.S. player pool, the game is expected to feature a number of younger players, including San Jose Earthquakes goalkeeper David Bingham.
The USA training camp, which was convened by head coach Jurgen Klinsmann, began in early January and featured a roster made up almost entirely of players from Major League Soccer. Bingham, who is joined by fellow MLS 'keepers Bill Hamid of DC United and Luis Robles of the New York Red Bulls, has not been named the starter for the match against Iceland.
If Bingham does get into the game, it will mark the first senior team cap for the 26-year-old. His call-up this January marks the first selection to a U.S. national team at any level.
Two other Earthquakes were initially named to the January camp roster, Fatai Alashe and Marc Pelosi, but both had to withdraw from consideration due to injury. Alashe underwent hernia surgery in mid January and is expected to be out until early March, and Pelosi is suffering from tendinitis that is likely to keep him out of Earthquakes preseason training until early February.
The three Quakes representatives all have eyes on making the U.S. U-23 squad later this spring when the USA faces Colombia in a home-and-away series for a berth in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.
The friendly is scheduled to kick off at 1:00 p.m. Pacific Time and will be televised live on ESPN2 in the United States. The commentator team of Adrian Healey and Taylor Twellman will make the call from the television booth, while sideline reporter Monica Gonzalez will handle the news from field level.
In the United States, UniMas will provide a Spanish-language broadcast. For those who want to watch online, Watch ESPN will have authenticated streaming on all devices.
