SAN JOSE, Calif. -- The San Jose Earthquakes and Portland Timbers close out the second weekend of the 2016 MLS season Sunday afternoon at Avaya Stadium, and first place in the Western Conference is on the line.
The Quakes made two changes to their starting line-up from the week before, a 1-0 victory over the Colorado Rapids, giving rookie Kip Colvey the start at left back in place of the injured Shaun Francis and Fatai Alashe in the center of the park moving Simon Dawkins to left midfielder and Shea Salinas to the bench.
Colvey did well as a halftime substitute against the Rapids, helping the Quakes defense claim a clean sheet in their season opener. Alashe sat out the entire preseason due to injury and is making his first appearance of the 2016 season.
The Earthquakes bench includes Innocent, the team's highest paid player, and Matias Perez Garcia, who, along with Innocent and Dawkins, makes up the squad's three Designated Player contingency. Homegrown player Tommy Thompson, who appeared as a substitute last weekend, is on the bench again.
