Street Soccer USA will move it's annual Bay Area tournament this year -- a few blocks east from Civic Center Plaza to Union Square. The compact rubber-matted fields will be installed in time for the weekend kick off of the tournament July 16 and 17.
Street Soccer USA's programs run nationwide and provide youth ages 6-18, and young adults ages 18-30, with teamwork and life skills lessons through soccer in its community based clubs, after school programs, and in partnership with schools and other social service providers.
Since being founded in 2007, Street Soccer USA has helped more than 4,000 people into housing - check out this recent article by Kevin Fagan at SFGate.com on the success of in the Bay Area.
Teams from San Francisco and across the Bay Area, ranging in age from six through to adult will compete in exciting four versus four 15-minute matchups in a specially built Street Soccer Stadium.
Earthquakes fans will be especially interested in Sunday's celebrity game hosted by Chris Wondolowski, a Street Soccer USA ambassador who will meet with the tournament participants. The first clues of the expected team members have come from Chris's dad John - no word yet on the final lineup of Team Wondo.

Chris has been connected with SSUSA for several years, and according to John "each year Chris will find his way up to San Francisco a few evenings and meet with the soon-to-be-not-homeless-people in the SSUSA program and play with them at their Street Soccer Training...the SSUSA players [are] just inspirational - the entire organization is honestly the most inspirational team that I have ever seen".
The event is a free and open to the public -- check it out: it's fast, furious and a lot of fun. Here are the details of this weekend's street soccer activities in San Francisco.
