The Earthquakes take on the Colorado Rapids in a match-up of two MLS originals this Saturday at Avaya Stadium. The weekly email sent out by the team says the Earthquakes are looking to avenge an earlier loss in the season when the Rapids beat the Quakes 2-1 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park but every supporter knows that at this point in the season this team is playing to stay away from the wooden spoon. For the uninitiated, the wooden spoon award is handed out to the MLS team that finishes the season with the least amount of points. Actually handed out is misleading as this award mostly lives on Reddit, for more information check out this post that seems to be the beginning of the wooden spoon in MLS. Either way that is an award I hope stays out of the Quakes trophy room and for anybody keeping track the Galaxy are the current spooners or is it spoonees?
Back to Saturday. The Quakes come off the international break feeling good about themselves after holding Liga MX leaders Cruz Azul to a scoreless draw last Saturday. But that was a friendly against a foreign opponent who didn’t seem too interested in the game. The Quakes and Rapids come into this game sporting a similar 1-1-7 record in the last nine league matches. Even with this dismal record, the Rapids are currently 7 points ahead of the Earthquakes and therefore safe of winning(?) the wooden spoon.
Another thing to watch on Saturday, if Chris Wondolowski scores he will tie Landon Donovan for the all-time MLS scoring record at 145 goals. The legend is about the only consistent piece of happiness that any Quakes supporter has had for several seasons. After reading this article, written by another Bay Area legend, about how Wondo stayed on the team because of the supporters it makes me think what this last couple of seasons would have been like without the G.O.A.T. Nope, nope back to my happy place. See you on Saturday!
