Going into this years MLS SuperDraft the San Jose Earthquakes are in full rebuild mode. The team has brought in a new coaching staff and is slowly working on overhauling their roster to keep up with the rapidly evolving MLS. Just about any position on the pitch can use an upgrade if the right player is available whether in the draft or through some other kind of signing.
The team had a terrible scoring season last year so an offensive upgrade wouldn’t be wrong, but this is the Quakes we are talking about after all. Jesse Fioranelli doesn’t have a stellar record of picking the right players, but I still believe one day that dart will find itself to the bulls-eye.
2. Frankie Amaya, attacking midfielder, UCLA
Having an early pick in the draft let the Quakes pick the player they can use to best mold for their re-build led by new manager Matias Almeyda, and Frankie Amaya is that player. “El Pelado” likes to play a 4-2-3-1 that puts a lot of pressure on other teams backline and the UCLA freshman fits perfectly into this scheme. The 18-year-old is a Generation Adidas player which made him eligible for this year’s draft and has spent time on the USMNT U-20. Almeyda has a history of giving young players a chance and putting them in positions to help them succeed.
