So … not a great start to the 2019 campaign. Most fans knew the start to the Matias Almeyda era (I’ll stop saying that after the second game, promise) was about the long con rather than a quick fix. That’s a good thing after a series of band-aid solutions that got San Jose nowhere – but that doesn’t mean the interim will be all that pleasant.
Enter where the Quakes sit in a bevy of site’s power rankings after the first week of the MLS season. Let’s start with MLSSoccer.com’s reaction to San Jose’s first-week loss to the Montreal Impact.
Last Week: 22
This Week: 23
The Quakes came out of the gates and took an early lead to open the Matias Almeyda era, but it turned out to be more of the same as their opponent flipped the result and handed them a loss. Like the Whitecaps, we’ll have to see how long it takes for the ideas and chemistry to bed in.
This Week: 23
Wondo watch continues as the Quakes fell to Montreal, 2-1. Magnus Eriksson scored the lone goal for San Jose and newcomers Marcos Lopez, and Cristian Espinoza had bright moments.
This Week: 23
Another game, another home loss. At least they get to play FC Dallas twice again this year.

Well! All the more reason to hope the Quakes beat Dallas this year, I guess. We’ll have a question and answer session with Minnesota United blog E Pluribus Loonum later this week to get their take on their up-and-coming squad after a convincing win against the Vancouver Whitecaps. In the meantime, let’s watch Magnus Eriksson’s goal again to end things on a more palatable note.
