With the 12th pick in the 2020 MLS Draft, the San Jose Earthquakes selected defender Tanner Beason from Stanford. Jesse Fioranelli and the Quakes didn’t look far to make their first selection in a part of their roster that is thin at the moment.

The 6’ 1” Tanner can play both center-back and left-back and had an impressive 20 goals in 80 matches while playing for the Cardinal. Matias Almeyda is probably not too concerned with getting defender that can score, but with his style of play, he loves defenders that can fly up the wings and contribute to the attack, and this is where Tanner seems to fit in.

Stanford was not known as a traditional powerhouse in men’s soccer, but while Tanner was there, they won three national championships. His last two seasons at Stanford, he was a semi-finalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy, which is awarded to the best player in college soccer.
