San Jose Earthquakes to face Sporting Kansas City in 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs

The rare scenario where you haven’t played your playoff opponent yet.

MLS: San Jose Earthquakes at Sporting Kansas City Peter G. Aiken

Now we know the San Jose Earthquakes’ seed and upcoming opponent in the 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs.

The Earthquakes finished as the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference, and so they’ll take on the No. 1 seed, which is Sporting Kansas City, in the opening round of the playoffs, which will be the week of Thanksgiving. It’s a single-elimination game, and it will be held at Sporting KC’s home of Children’s Mercy Park.

Somewhat strangely, because of the bizarre 2020 season we’re in, the Earthquakes and Sporting have not played once this season. Since teams generally all play each other at least once in a season, and within the conference usually multiple times, this is certainly unusual, which brings an added wrinkle to the whole scenario.

The specific date and time of the game has yet to be determined. But now the road is here for the Earthquakes, as they embark on what they hope is a deep playoff run.
