Santa Clara County announced on Monday evening that mass gatherings of more than 1,000 people have been banned for the remainder of March, a measure taken intended to stop the spread of the coronavirus locally. The San Jose Earthquakes subsequently announced they will comply with the order.

The Quakes’ announcement says they “will soon have more information regarding upcoming events at Earthquakes Stadium.” Their next home game is March 21 against Sporting Kansas City, as they’re on the road this Saturday against the Philadelphia Union.
Beyond that, it looks like a pretty quiet month for the venue, although the U.S. Women’s National Team is supposed to play Brazil in a friendly on April 14. While that does stretch beyond the mass gathering ban, at this stage we have to wait and see if that game will carry on or be canceled or moved.
I won’t pretend to know how the Earthquakes will deal with the March 21 game, but I won’t be shocked if it’s postponed and rescheduled for later in the year, on the hope that the coronavirus threat recedes. But for now, we’ll have to wait and see what happens, and we’ll offer updates when we get them.
