Vote: Best San Jose Earthquakes jersey, 2000-05

Which one was best in your book?

Dwayne De Rosario #14

We continue jersey week with the latest entry in our jersey bracket tournament, looking at the San Jose Earthquakes jerseys between the name change and the hiatus.

Following the bold designs of the San Jose Clash years, the return to the Earthquakes brand was, well, kind of bland. But, there’s consistency and the colors match so it’s something.

Now, let’s walk through the jerseys between 2000-05, and at the end you get to vote on the best one of the era.

2000-02

Ronald Cerritos #20...

I was a big fan of the Clash’s hoops design, but that was gone when the Quakes brand came back. The primarys at the turn of the millennium look like a sweater vest, a recognizable look in MLS for the era but maybe not iconic.

2000-03

A.J. Wood #7...

On the bright side, the secondary jerseys were white, but the suspender straps gave some continuity with the sweater vest look in the primary jerseys. Worth noting both of these designs were what the Quakes wore in the season when they won their first MLS Cup, and for the secondary jerseys, for their second as well.

Design-wise, these primary jerseys, with a black panel on the obliques, are kind of boring, but this is probably the most “classic” of this era of Quakes jerseys, probably the first one you think of.

2004

MLS - San Jose Earthquakes vs Colorado Rapids - October 2, 2004

I quite like this secondary, the white-and-blue inversion of the primary, with the contrast panels showing up a bit better.

2005

In 2005, Adidas became the Quakes kit manufacturer, and this design is pretty similar to the previous Nike one. Most notably, the blue is a different shade, but the color-blocking is pretty similar to the old one, with a few more swooshes (not the Nike kind, though) thrown in.

San Jose Earthquakes v Colorado Rapids

I’m not going to lie, this plain white secondary with the only design feature being the three stripes on the shoulders in the team’s colors look like what Adidas has been putting out the past few years for most teams. I guess on that basis this is the most modern look of the lot.
