San Jose Earthquakes to play Seattle Sounders, FC Dallas, Vancouver Whitecaps in restart tournament

Buckle up for some soccer.

So now the San Jose Earthquakes know who they will face in the group stage for the MLS is Back Tournament, the restart competition to get MLS going again after the coronavirus shutdown.

I’ve got some good news and some bad news: The Quakes will play the defending MLS champions, Seattle Sounders, in Group B. They’ll also take on a 2019 playoff team in FC Dallas, but they will also face the Vancouver Whitecaps, who finished 10 points below the Earthquakes in the standings last year.

However, having said all that, with teams in most cases not even fully training yet and everyone having been on ice for over three months, the odds on paper are a total crapshoot. Yes, the Quakes look like they have a tough draw, but given how few games there will be and the amount of uncertainty with the Orlando tournament overall, who knows what could happen? It only takes seven games to win the whole thing, and pretty much any team can do it.

So there you have it. We’ll be awaiting the schedule now for the competition, which kicks off on July 8, and we’ll pass that info along as we get it. In the meantime, time to gear up for some MLS soccer to be played soon.
