Earthquakes loan watch: Williamson slots into Riverhounds lineup

Catching up with San Jose players out and about.

MLS: 2021 San Jose Media Day USA TODAY NETWORK

The San Jose Earthquakes no longer have a formal affiliation agreement with any USL teams, but they do have a few players on loan around the USL Championship at present. Let’s check in on how things have started for them.

Thomas Williamson

The rookie forward was sent way far out to the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, but he’s gotten his feet wet in the professional game, playing the first few games of the team’s 2021 season so far. Williamson started the first two games for Pittsburgh and came off the bench in the most recent game, a 1-0 home loss to Charlotte Independence last weekend.

Williamson has an assist so far this season, as he headed on a long ball that Russell Cicerone ran onto and slammed home in Pittsburgh’s second game.

So all in all, he’s getting playing time right away and also chipped in on the stat sheet, so a good start for the attacker.

Gilbert Fuentes and Casey Walls

The Homegrown duo were both sent on loan to Austin Bold FC, which has started the season 1-1-1. However, there’s been nary a peep from the duo so far. Walls made the bench for one of Austin’s games, but hasn’t made it out on the field yet. It does not appear Fuentes has even been in a matchday squad. Walls has also posed for a photo in Austin’s kit on the team website, and it doesn’t look like Fuentes has. What’s going on? No idea at this point, it is still early in the season. But I will keep an eye on things for the Austin guys.
