San Jose Earthquakes forward Cade Cowell had a breakout performance in Week 2 of the 2021 MLS regular season. And then he topped it.
A week after scoring a memorable goal and memorable assist, Cowell had a goal and two assists in the Earthquakes’ 4-1 win over D.C. United on Saturday and was voted MLS Player of the Week for Week 3 for his performance.
Cowell opened proceedings Saturday by feeding Chofís Lopez in the first minute for San Jose’s first goal, then followed it up with an audacious solo effort to score in the 26th minute, beating a D.C. defender in a footrace and slamming his shot home at full speed. He then set up the night’s final goal, a cross that was headed in by Jackson Yueill.

In fact, Cowell and Yueill were both named to the MLS Team of the Week, Yueill scoring a brace himself in the victory.

Cowell is 17, and is the youngest player to win MLS Player of the Week since Freddy Adu in 2005.
Needless to say, he’s been on fire the last couple weeks and this latest honor is certainly deserved. Congrats to Cade and let’s hope this vein of form continues.
